At a time when newspapers and TV report division between sections of our country, we may look back to the tragic sectional animosity of the Civil War.  In 2020, racism dominated many news cycles. One hundred and sixty years ago, slavery was the policy on which there was no compromise. Why do old issues and divisions continue?  Why has there not been more progress over that time?

 
Memoirs and biographies of leaders on both sides have been published, but we rarely hear from ordinary men and women. In the following posts, we will go back to the years of our most costly war and explore the divisions at that time as reflected in the letters of ordinary people.
