0f the almost daily letters Elizabeth McCartney wrote to her husband while he was with the 131st Illinois Infantry in the Vicksburg campaign, this is dated June 28, 1863:
My Deare Husband
I received your letter of the 10 this eavening also one from Joseph Grant Well thinks you Jo grant is wighting to my wife all redy yes and I have written to him what do you think of that sir it is true and help your selfe if you can Jane says she is going to write to you and tell you that you had better some home for Henry Tucker has bin to see me and Jo Grant left his wife and is wrighting to me but then she says it is no use for you to come home you can just mary some old wench down there and it is no use for you to git jealous of me for you have all redy made an agreement not to be jealous
Well I was glad to here from you and to here that you are well gives me mutch satisfaction at all times we are able to be up at this time We have had a vary hard raine here it commenced last night and rained all night and day to day and is still misting I am tired of so mutch rain and slop but the gardens wanted some rain I have bin hoeing in the garden but the ground is so soft that it wont make any thing with all the work in the world but it has not had half a nuf work this summer
Well the truth is I have written something to you here lately and you do not git them that I have all most got out of patince and have not got any thing to write I think there is as mutch as half a dozen letters on the way to you unless some one else has kept them Jane says some one has got my likeness and see how good looking I am and so they kept the letters the nonscece in a while it is late and I must go to bed and dream sweet dreams of you so Good Night
Well it I still raining and is as mudy as can be I have washed to day and have got don and got some clean clothes and so I thought I would finish this letter so as to have it redy fo the male to marrow I do not know whether it will ever git to you or not but if you dont you cannot blame me for I think I have don my part but would a little rather you would git them for I do not care about evry one seeing my noncence that I intend for you but if it does them any good let them keep it I would like to see you but it is no use to tell you that for I cannot git to see you but do the best you can and take good care of your selfe and maybe we will git to see each other some of these days I have had to send so mutch for wood and one thing and another that you would have done your selfe if you had bin here but I can not help it I have done the best I can and bin saving as I could all I have to say to you is to come home a soon as you can and attend to the money your self then you will know where the money goes
Perhaps you would like to know what Jo Grant rote to me for well he wants me to board his little girl so she can go to school I told him I would board hur a while is that right or not Well I did not send you blank paper this time wright soon Your loving wife Lizzie
